Hebri, 27 Oct 2015: Heard of stories of how constrictors gobble their prey and then digest the sumptuous meal by swirling up on a tree.

In a rather unbelievable tale, a five-year-old boy from Hebri who was almost swallowed by a hungry python, managed to escape the fatal jaws and reached home safe.

It was on the day of Vijayadashami that little Sakshath Shetty had been to Yakshimatt along with his father Santhosh Shetty and family from their home at Kolibetta in Perdoor.

After completing the darshan, the family was walking down a grassy narrow lane. It was here that a python spotted little Sakshath. Even as their house was just 15 to 20 feet away, little Sakshath’s leg was grabbed by a python, which launched an attack from a bush.

But, even before Sakshath’s parents and others could rush to his rescue, he had managed to hit the python with his other leg. The constrictor weakened its hold on the little boy’s leg and the boy had a miraculously escape.

The family, instead of trying to nab the python, paid attention towards taking care of the boy whose leg was bleeding profusely due to the injuries caused by the jaw hold of the constrictor.

Sakshath was rushed to Hiriyadka government hospital and at present his condition is better.

However, herpetologist Gururaj Sanil says that this is the season when pythons come out in open. The boy must have stepped on the python unknowingly and due to the provocation the constrictor must have grabbed him.

"Pythons have about 200 to 250 teeth, which they use to push their prey to the stomach. The injuries are caused during this process of gulping the prey. This is not a poisonous snake," he says.
