Mangaluru, 27 June 2015: Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim instructed the officers to identify Malekudiya tribal colonies to provide all basic amenities.
DC Ibrahim was speaking during the district level meeting of overseeing Committee that was formed to provide basic amenities under Malekudiya tribal special development project, held at his office here on Friday June 26.
He also instructed the officers to identify 4 such colonies in Beltangady taluk and one each in other taluks in order to provide better amenities.
He further said that there are 1,589 Malekudiya families in Dakshina Kannada district and their population is about 7,764. The state government has launched several programmes under Malekudiya special development project, while the Malekudiya tribals are least backward among tribal communities, in order to provide basic amenities. The state government released Rs 2.27 crore in this regard. Accordingly, Rs 25 lac sanctioned to repair 100 houses @ Rs 25,000 each, to lay culvert @ Rs 1.17 crore, for drinking water project Rs 20 lac, to construct 2 community buildings @ Rs 40 lac, to provide financial assistance to 10 beneficiaries to run tourist taxies under self employment project @ Rs 25 lac.
Despite the state funds are available for the development of Malekudiya community, very few people are coming forward to avail the benefits. This leads to unutilized funds. The need of the hour is to create awareness programmes in this regard, said DC Ibrahim.
