Farmers leaders visit plantation destroyed by effluents from water treatment plant

Bantwal, 7 Jun 2015: Karnataka state Raita Sangh – Hasiru Sene members on Saturday June 6 visited the plantation of Dilip Rai at Valavoor, near here whose farmland was flood with the effluents of water treatment plant in Thumbay, near here. It supplies the drinking water to Mangaluru town.
Over 1,000 areca plants and over 150 palm trees that were in 2 acre plot of Dilip was nearly perished owing to effluents released from the water treatment plant in Thumbay, near here. Over 2 feet depth of water still lies in Dilip’s farm caused by effluents.
Karnataka state Raita Sangh state secretary Kumar Subramanya Shastry said that despite several pleas to CM, MP, MLA, DC, Tahsildar and Mangaluru civic body in the past, nothing has been done. The district award winner for paddy cultivation Dilip is worried about his future as the plantation will completely perish due to stagnant effluents. Its advisable to release the effluents from water treatment plant to faraway in the river, said Shastry.
The peasants’ fraternity threatened the Mangaluru civic body to shut down the water treatment plant by locking the premises, if there is further delay in addressing their issue.
Karnataka state Raita Sangh honorary advisor Muruva Mahabala Bhat, district president Sridar Shetty, organizing secretary Manohar Shetty, Kepu zonal president Sudhakar Poojary were present.
