Bantwal, 22 May 2015: Two brothers who have gone for bathing were drowned in Netravati River, at Sujir, in Pudu village, near here on Thursday May 21 evening.
The deceased has been identified as fifteen-year-old Mohammed Sahil and twelve-year-old Mohammed Suhail, sons of Isaac, a resident of Sujir Malli. Both Sahil and Suhail were the students of Holy Family School, Meramajal, near here.
The tragedy occurred when the brothers ventured into the river to bath after playing cricket with several boys at Sujir, near here. Suhail was about to drown in a deep pit in the river, when his brother Sahil rushed to help, while in the process, both were drowned.
Bantwal rural police registered a case in this regard. Bantwal circle inspector K U Belliyappa, sub-inspector Rakshit Gowda and others arrived at the spot.
The locals allege the deep pits in the river are caused by earthmovers that dug up the sand for loading into trucks. These pits are flooded with rain water and not visible clearly. The locals urge the mining and geology department officials to take action in this regard.
