Mangaluru: Society needs to change perception of Trans-genders - Ramya

Mangaluru, 07 Apr 2015: ‘Change should take place from the family, until then its difficult for the society to accept us, the way we are,’ said Ramya, member of trans-genders Association.

 

St Aloysius College (Autonomous) department of mass communication, in association with Arivu Yuva Kendra - Bantwal (NGO) organized a programme titled Dhwani (voice of voiceless) at Eric Mathias Hall of St Aloysius College here on Monday April 6.  It was held to create awareness on sexual minorities.

 

Arivu Yuva Kendra - Bantwal president Nadamani Nalkur inaugurated the programme.

 

 

Speaking on the occasion, Nadamani said that the difference between the  male  and  female has been followed since ancient times that makes it difficult for the society to accept the trans-genders. He also said that trans-genders enjoyed respect during the mythological times of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

 

Dr Poornima J, gynecologist/obstetrician, addressing the trans-genders said, ‘Health should be the first priority for them and she also provided them an opportunity to meet her personally and discus their health issues.’

 

Praveen Nikhil, coordinator of trans-genders Association, stressed on how the society needs to change their perspective of thinking. His team comprising Ramya and Prashant also addressed the audience regarding the challenges faced by them and other sexual minorities.

 

The event concluded with vote of thanks and giving away of the memento which was followed by an open forum where the audience interacted with Praveen Nikhil and his team.
