Udupi: Open drains in Moodubelle GP overflowing with garbage but none bothered

Udupi, 07 Feb 2015: Belle gram panchayat (GP) near here had constructed concrete drains on either side of road from upper market to lower market. However, now heap of garbage lies in the open drains because none of them are bothered for its maintenance. The shopkeepers and restaurant owners are dumping their garbage straight into the drains and it has fully cluttered the drains already. The leftovers of tender coconut, rotten garbage and other solid waste are all dumped into drains along with effluents that has become breeding spot for mosquitoes and flies. It’s a health hazard inviting malaria, dengue fever and other contagious diseases.
Besides, the drinking water pipes that are laid in the drains carry water to homes. The effluents finds its way into cracked pipes are likely to cause water-borne diseases on unsuspecting household families.
The health department seems not bothered in this regard. The slabs that were laid to cover the drains are damaged in a few spots. To sum up, Belle gram panchayat is not bothered to restore the drains for its purpose. The people are waiting when the open drains cleared of muck and garbage!

| It really pains. I think some one should take initiative. Need of the moment for us is a good waste management system. I am sure our capable leaders will handle this particular mess in no time. Every Bellean should take initiate to keep our town clean including shop keepers to start with. All it takes is little patience by hotel and shop keepers to collect their garbage and dispose off once a day in a designated area! I am not sure if we have any such garbage disposal point. I am willing to be a part of the team if there is initiative. Finding man power for such task is not an easy job these days!! | |
