Puttur, Nov 07, 2014: St Philomena College, Centre for PG studies and Research, here organised educational visit to Mangalore University, Konaje, Mangalore in association with Physics Forum, recently. All II MSc Physics students and faculty members were actively participated in this visit.

The first visit was to Centre for application Radio-isotopes And Radiation Technology(CARRT), where Research scholars explained briefly about the working principle and applications  of gamma detector, carbon-14 labelling laboratory, radioimmunoassay laboratory, Thermo luminescent Dosimeter , Gamma chamber 5000, fluorometer to measure Photosynthetic parameters, in varies aspects. After that visited DST-PURSE laboratory, where have got the opportunity to study about working of single crystal XRD, liquid chromatography-Mass spectrometry (LC-MS), amino acid analyser, field effect scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), differential scanning calorimeter, UV-Vis spectroscopy, magnetron sputtering unit.

Afternoon visited University science Instrumentation centre (USIC) that is providing analytical facility through sophisticated analytical equipments. Research scholars there explained the working of different detectors such as: beta counter, HPGe detector, NaI detector, alpha detector. The next visit was to University Microtron Center. A microtron is a type of particle accelerator concept originating from the cyclotron in which the accelerating field is not applied through large D-shaped electrodes, but through a linear accelerator structure. Microtrons are designed to operate at constant field frequency and magnetic field in the ultra relativistic limit. Thus they are especially suited for very light elementary particles, namely electrons. In the University Microtron Center the emitted electrons have the maximum energy of about 8Mev. These energetic electrons are used to irradiate the samples/materials to bring significant changes in materials inherent properties, which may lead to plenty of other applications. Lastly there was an orientation for the students in the University Library.

This educational visit was intended to instil research thinking and it was in par with their academic studies so as to have ocular proof of the things they study.
