Bantwal: Four-legged chicken surprises people
Bantwal, 29 Oct 2014: A four legged chicken born at Thumbay has taken everyone by surprise. The rare bird is born at the house of Padmavathi residing in Lacchil.
The bird born just 12 days ago has two normal legs and an extra set of what appear to be suspended legs that dangle from behind. But the extra legs are not strong enough as the front ones.
“At first, the chicken looked normal but over time, the two extra legs grew and our family discovered them" said Padmavathi. Many curious people have flocked to their house to see the special chicken.
It is also said that the chicken must be suffering from ’Polymelia’, a birth defect involving limbs, in which the affected individual or animal has more than the usual number of limbs. The extra limb is most commonly shrunken and/or deformed which is also known as ’Parasite’.
Polymelia is basically a genetic deformity. It happens during development of embryo and sometimes not only in chicks but other animals too go through this says a research.
