Puttur: Yaksha Patya Gayana at St Philomena College

Puttur, Sep 23, 2014: Mangalore University has introduced a subject on Yakshagana for ll degree students from this academic year. In this direction department of Kannada, Kannada Association and Yakshakala Kendra of St Philomena College here organised a programme ‘Yaksha Patya Gayana’ on Friday September 19.
This initiative has been taken in order to give an insight on Yakshagana which is a prominent folk art of our area.
The College principal Professor Leo Noronha in his presidential address said, ‘We should take care to protect and further the art forms of coastal area which will enhance our knowledge about folk arts.’
Speaking on the occasion, the campus director and PG Studies chairman Fr Antony Prakash Monteiro said, ‘In order to live harmoniously in society it is necessary that we should develop interest in art and culture of our area.’
The resource persons for the session were head of department of Sanskrit Professor D Ishwara Shastry, Yakshakala Kendra convener Prashanth Rai, Akshay, Mrudanga Masheesh and moderator Harish Belanta Moharu.
The head of department of Kannada Dr Vijaykumar Moleyar welcomed the gathering. II B Com student Sushmita proposed vote of thanks. II B Com student Priyanka compered the programme.
