Puttur: Eco – Environ rally held in city on I – Day

Puttur, Aug 16, 2014 : At the joint auspices of Suraksha Consumer Forum, NSS, Rovers and Rangers, Performing Arts and Eco Club of St Philomena College and St Philomena PU College, here, in association with town council and Rotary Club International (RCI) Puttur – East, organised a rally in order to create mass awareness on environment and consumer rights on the occasion of Independence Day at the College campus here on Friday August 15.
The town council chief officer Rekha J Shetty was the chief guest of stage programme held before the rally here on Fridaymorning.
St Philomena PU College principal Professor Leo Norohna, campus director Fr Antony Prakash Monteiro, alma mater president Jayakumar Rai, RCI Puttur – East zonal lieutenant Sacchidanand were present at the dais.
Rekha J Shetty after inaugurating the programme said, ‘This programme will create awareness among the people to keep our environment clean and also about the consumer rights,’ said Rekha. Further she said, ‘We neglect the environment which results in lot of calamities and it makes it essential to take care of the environment,’ said Rekha. ‘There is an urgent need to educate our consumers who often are taken for a ride,’ added Rekha. She congratulated the college for taking this initiative.
Fr Antony Prakash Monteiro said, ‘Along with educating the society about the environment and consumer rights we should educate ourselves and implement this in our day to day life,’ said Fr Monteiro.
Consumer Forum director Professor Dinakar Rao said that environmental protection and consumer rights are the pressing issue all over the world. In order to have a better society it is important to develop in each of these areas.
The rally moved towards the destination with students displaying the banner and placards and raising slogans. A street play was performed about the importance of protecting the environment in Darbe Circle and Private Bus Stand premises. The rally concluded at Private Bus Stand premises.
