Mangalore: ‘Lineman’s electrocution act of negligence’
DHNS
Mangalore, 29 May 2012: The electrocution of lineman Gerald Veigas on May 13 is equal to murder. It was an act of negligence and people responsible should be punished, demanded International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations (IFKCA) State Convenor Denis D’Silva at a press meet on Tueday.
The branch officer of Vamanjoor feeder Gurumurthy made lineman Gerald Veigas and Shanthakumar work forcibly on the line fault in Vamanjoor. He did not take prior permission from Kavoor Branch Officer or Assistant Executive Engineer. Gerald was not given any safety equipment, he said.
Inspite of the family members filing a complaint against Gurumurthy, he has not been arrested. Gurumurthy and Manjappa should be suspended from the MESCOM and police should take action. However, if action is not taken, then a Satyagraha will be held in front of the MESCOM office, he warned.
Gerald Veigas’s mother Lethesia Veigas, wife Zeena Veigas also attended the press meet.

1. While moral and political support has come from IFKCA, judicial and technical support must come from legal and engineering luminaries in the city without charging any fee for their services. The bereaved need them. 2. When a tragedy such as this strikes, people like us will comment and move on; but change can come only when our corporations and their leaders focus on HSE, staff competency development and training. How can this happen? Only, if there is an alternative. That power generation and distribution is a state monopoly is a factor in blocking change of our work culture and mindset. Privatization with an independent Electricity Regulatory Body is a direction this sector should move into. Will it ever happen? | |

Looks like here the guilty is trying to escape his responsibility and punishment waiting. His seniors too are protecting him. I think more pressure is needed to nab those responsible for Gerald s death and matter be kept alive and the authorities forced to take quick action. Also all compensation be paid to the poor family members. Well done Mr. Denis and please don t leave the the culprits until they are brought to justice. |
