South Zone Open chess championship - Vanessa and Shandilya fight

Mangalore, 13 October 2011: J.Malleshwara Rao (AP), Abdul Majeed (KER) and P Satyanarayana (AP) are in the joint lead with four points each,after 4 Rounds in the CAI South Zone Chess tournament being organised by King’s Academy, Mangalore at Srinivasa Kalyana Mantap, VT Road, Mangalore.
Rohan Shandilya (KAR), Akash M (KAR) and Vanessa D’souza (KAR) are sharing the next positions with 3.5 points each. Local talents Naman M Shetty, Shreyas Pandith, Swathi B, Yashas Samaga, Reesha Shenoy, Arjun Adappa, A Anutthama and many others are in 3 points giving close fight to the leaders.
In 4th round, Malleshwara Rao defeated Naman M Shetty, Abdul Majeed Defeated Ramalingam and P Satyanarayana defeated Shreyas Pandith.
In very closely fought game, CAI National women Champion & Karnataka’s star player Vanessa D’souza and Piloo Modi Tournament’s Joint winner & one of the top CAI player Rohan Shandilya’s game witnessed spectacular endgame play. It appeared as Vanessa totally clinched the win, however Rohan put forth brave fight back to create drawish endgame inspite of being material down. Game ended with draw after 4.5 hour play.
There still 4 more rounds to be played.In the total 2 lakh rupees prize money, Rs.50,000/- will be awarded to different age group cash prizes.
