18 Apr 2014: Do you worry about your health every time you reach out for that bar of dark chocolate?

Well, you could indulge once in a while as a new study has reportedly revealed that dark chocolate and red wine not only taste great, but also have heart-healthy components.

With a cocoa content of 70% or higher, dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids, which help prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries. It also boosts the immune system and contains cancer-fighting enzymes.

Meanwhile, red wine contains resveratrol, which has been found to lower blood sugar and LDL or ’bad’ cholesterol. It is also a source of catechins, which can help improve HDL or ’good’ cholesterol and polyphenols, which may prevent the formation of toxic plaque that leads to Alzheimer’s disease.

Kidney beans: A good source of stress-busting vitamin B, iron, and calcium, kidney beans help maintain a good heart.

Blueberries: Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, blueberries contain lesser calories and sugar, so you can eat them to your heart’s content. They are also a good source of fiber, which can help relieve the cramps and constipation that can occur when you’re under stress.

Salmon: Containing omega-3 fatty acids, having grilled salmon is a good way to keep your heart healthy.

Papaya: Packed with beta-carotene, vitamin C, E, calcium and magnesium, papaya helps improve your blood circulation.

Flaxseeds: Containing ’good’ fats and soluble and insoluble fiber, eating ground flaxseeds can reduce the risk of heart disease.

Asparagus: Easy to cook and low in calories, asparagus has anti-inflammatory nutrients like folate and vitamins C and D and is known to maintain good heart health.

Walnuts: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, vitamin E, and folate, unsalted walnuts can go a long way in protecting your heart. Other nuts like almonds are also good for the heart.

Other heart-healthy foods

Oatmeal: This fiber-rich superfood also comprises omega-3 fatty acids, folate and potassium, which can help reduce your cholesterol levels and maintain healthy arteries.

Broccoli: This green veggie contains essential vitamins and folic acid and said to help relieve stress, anxiety, panic, and in extreme cases, even depression.
