4 superfoods for good health
05 Apr 2013: Imagine a superfood to help you lower your cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer, and even better mood. The good news is that they are available at your local supermarket!
Fish
Make fish a part of your daily diet as it is good for your heart, joints and memory. The omega 3s you get in fish lower heart disease risk, help arthritis and keep Alzheimer at bay, say experts. Research even shows that it reduces depression too. Buy cold-water fish such as salmon, herring, sardines and mackerel. Have them at least twice a week. If you are a vegetarian, include eggs, flax seed, and walnuts, which are rich in omega 3s. These superfoods are also high in monounsaturated fats, which can lower cholesterol.
Soy
A study shows that a diet of soy fiber, protein from oats and barley lowers cholesterol. The good thing is you can include tofu and soy milk in your diet.
Black tea or green tea
It has been proven that the overall antioxidant power of black tea is the same as that of green tea, which can help in lowering cholesterol and prevent cancer. However, it goes without saying that green tea has more health benefits. A recent Japanese study on green tea found that men who drank green tea regularly had lower cholesterol than those who didn’t.
Dark chocolate
Research has shown that dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and can lower blood pressure. So next time you buy chocolate, look for the ones with 60% or higher cocoa content; the darker, the better. The darker it is, the lower the fat and sugar content.
