Negative impact of mobile phones on health
Mobile
07 Dec 2013 (Health Me Up): Mobile phones have transformed into a basic human necessity. This multipurpose gadget has become an extended version of us.
While most of us are aware of the ongoing criticism about the health impacts of mobile phone radiation, they are too much of a convenience to give up. But radiation is not the only health risk involved. Mobile phones have several other negative impacts on our daily health, here’s what you should know about mobile phones and their effects on your health.
Infested with germs
Your phones don’t need to literally come in contact with dirt or mud to be contaminated by germs. You carry your mobile phone everywhere you go and it touches many surfaces that may not be clean. Your own hand that holds the cell phone may not always be clean either. A research conducted in 2011, found that one in six mobile phones were contaminated with some sort of fecal matter and E. coli bacteria, which could cause fever, vomiting and diarrhea, if consumed; it stated that these germs were caused because the owner probably did not wash his hands.
To avoid this, ensure you wash your hands and use a sanitiser more often. But most of all get into the habit of cleaning your mobile phones regularly.
Eye health
You spend hours reading, texting and playing games on your mobile phones. In the process your eyes get strained when you concentrate on the small graphics/texts on the bright screen. This could lead to potential vision problems that could include symptoms like, eyes irritation and redness, blurred vision and headaches.
Be aware of your eye health when you use your mobile phones. Take regular eye breaks from glaring at the screen, clean your screen and increase your font size.
Stress
Your mobile phone constantly keeps you on edge as it constantly rings and vibrates. In a study conducted at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, researchers found that high use of mobile phones were associated with stress and sleep disorders in women. It was also associated with sleep disturbances and depression in men. This evidence only proves that the use of mobile phones is related to mental health and stress issues.
Sleep problems
Taking your phone to bed is not a good idea but most of us do it anyway. It is difficult to resist the phone when it is close to you even when in bed. Instead of relaxing your mind, you are constantly distracted by notifications and pop up messages. You won’t be able to sleep easily with so many thoughts and distractions. Most medical professionals recommend you switch off your phone, or keep it away from your bed when you sleep.
Social disconnect
A person can get so involved with the smartphone in his/her hand; they could potentially end up disconnected from the real world. People have admitted to giving cells phones more importance then real relationships in their lives. This can hamper your family life and could put a strain on your mental health.
