Udupi/Mooduelle, 10 Oct 2017: The Udupi District Level School Athletics Meet that was inaugurated with great fanfare on Monday, 9 October 2017, concluded successfully on Tuesday, 10 October 2017 with a grand valedictory function from 3 pm to 5 pm.
The valedictory function was presided over by Wilson Rodrigues-Memebr of Udupi Zilla Panchayat. Other dignitaries on the dais included Fr. Clement Mascarenhas- Correspondent of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions, Fr. Lawrence Cutinha-Assistant Parish Priest, Rajendra Kotian– Vice President of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Mrs. Geeta Wagle-Member of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Shirva, Venkatesh Nayak-Udupi Zonal Education Officer, Madhukar S-Udupi District Physical Education Officer, Vincent Fernandes-Vice President of Parish Council, Mrs. Latha D’Mello-Secretary of Parish Council, Gerald Fernandes-President of PTA, Devdas Hebbar-Former President of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Heads of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions, Members of Managing Committee and other dignitaries.
The penultimate and final exciting athletics event of day Relay Race was conducted for six categories of students in front of the dignitaries.
Around 150 Physical Training officials from various schools belonging to five zones meticulously conducted various track and field events during the two days of the Udupi District Level School Athletics Meet. All the events were conducted smoothly and disciplined manner without any dispute. Arrangements were made to write the certificates, arrange medals and present them to the first three winners of each event at a specially set up victory stand. Various dignitaries including donors, teachers and distinguished villagers who visited the venue to witness the sports meet were requested to present medals, certificates, flowers and in certain events even cash prizes sponsored by sports lovers.
The task of announcements and running commentary was excellently handled by three officials led by Satischandra Shetty of Chitrapadi School, Saligrama. The other two officials assisting him were Gopal Shetty of Government High School, Malpe and Srikant Samant of Balkudru School, Brahmavara.
Following the end of the Relay Race, the formal valedictory function was conducted. Prior to the stage programme, all the officials who were assigned to conduct different track and filed events proceeded in a line who were greeted by Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Madhukar S, Mrs. Leena D’Silva, Mrs. Veera Fernandes, Valeerian Crasta, Venkatesh Nayak,Vincent Fernandes, Gerald Fernandes and Kirti Kumar.
The athletes and students of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions went on a ‘jumble march past’ waving their hands towards the dignitaries on the stage. There was happiness and a sense of fulfilment on the faces of these students.
The stage programme commenced with the prayer song sung by the students of St. Lawrence PU College.
Following the welcome address by Sr. Irene Viegas, Headmistress of Church Aided Higher Primary School, Rajendra Kotian in his address appreciated the efforts of the students in participating in the athletics meet and wished the winners well for their future competitions at the state and national level.
Venkatesh Nayak congratulated the Correspondent and St. Lawrence Educational Institutions for conducting the District Level School Athletics Meet successfully.
Fr. Clement Mascarenhas in his message narrated the background of hosting the Udupi District Level School Athletics Meet and thanked all those who made it possible to conduct this mega event successfully. He thanked the members of the organizing committee, chairmen and members of various committees, heads of the institutions and their staff members, donors, students, volunteers and all the villagers of Moodubelle for supporting the event in various ways.
Madhukar S in his speech expressed gratitude to Fr. Clement Mascarenhas and St. Lawrence Educational Institutions for taking the responsibility of organizing the sport meet and providing all facilities to the officials and athletes.
In his presidential address, Wilson Rodrigues said that though India has made great progress in various other fields, it has been lacking in producing world class athletes. However, the central and state governments are making all efforts to encourage school children to take up sports. He made an appeal to the winners at the District level to perform well at the state level and try to get place in the national level competition.
Following the vote of thanks by Valerian Crasta, the most eagerly awaited prize distribution ceremony was conducted by the compere Satischandra Shetty. Medals, certificates and cash prizes were distributed by dignitaries on the dais to the winners of the relay Race.
Individual and Group Championship trophies as well as overall zonal championship trophy were presented in different categories by the dignitaries on the dais.
The Individual Champions:
1. Primary Boys: Sujit Poojary-Vidyamandir Primary School, Harady-Brahmavara Zone; Primary Girls: Sanjana-Carmel English Medium School, Kemmannu-Brahmavara Zone.
2. 14 years Boys: Yashas-Carmel English Medium School, Kemmannu-Brahmavara Zone; Girls: Srajana- SPP School, Udupi, Udupi Zone and Nishal Jurnist-Carmel English Medium School, Kemmannu-Brahmavra Zone.
3. 17 Years Boys: Rohan-Milagres English Medium School, Kallianpura-Brahmavara Zone and Kevin- Milagres English Medium School, Kallianpura-Brahmavara Zone. Girls: Jyotika- SSP School, Udupi-Udupi Zone.
Group Championship:
1. Primary Boys: Brahmavara Zone; Girls: Brahmavara Zone
2. 14 Years Boys: Udupi Zone; Girls: Udupi Zone
3. 17 Years Boys: Brahmavara Zone; Girls: Brahmavara Zone
Overall Championship: Brahmavara Zone
Soon after the end of the prize distribution ceremony, Fr. Clement Mascarenhas lowered the Udupi District Education Flag that was hoisted during the inaugural function on Monday. The champions went around the ground carrying the flag which was later handed over to Fr. Clement Mascarenhas along with the heads of St. Lawrence educational Institutions. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas in turn handed over the flag to Madhukar S. He transferred the same flag to the Headmaster of Mokambika School, Baindoor, Shivaram Bhat who will be hosting next year’s Udupi District School Athletics Meet.
As the final act of the valedictory function, dignitaries proceeded to the games’ flame stand. Vincent Fernandes extinguished the flame by pouring a bucket of water indicating the end of the two days long Udupi District Level School Athletics Meet. The valedictory function and the Udupi District School Athletics Meet ended for the year 2017-18 by singing the National Anthem.
The Udupi District School Athletics Meet for the physically challenged students will be held on Wednesday, 11 October 2017.
