New Delhi, 12 Oct 2012 (DHNS): An unidentified person on Friday hurled a slipper at Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, during a protest against price rise by India Against Corruption activists and residents of Nand Nagri in north-west Delhi.
The incident occurred at 11 am when Dikshit went to inaugurate two renovated circle offices of the Food and Supplies department at Nand Nagri. As she reached the venue, locals and IAC supporters waved black flags and raised slogans criticising price rise and the stiff hike in power tariff.
When Dikshit started her speech, a group of women marched to the stage and shouted “Sheila Dikshit hai hai.”
While pandemonium reigned in the hall, an unidentified person threw a slipper at Dikshit. However, it did not hit the chief minister. Despite the ruckus, Dikshit continued her speech and inaugurated the offices before leaving quickly. As she came out of the premises, hundreds of protesters encircled her car and raised slogans. Some demonstrators even obstructed her convoy. Police pushed two people, including a woman, out of the convoy’s way and dispersed the crowd.
After Dikshit left, the protesters laid siege to Power Minister Haroon Yusuf’s vehicle, who also attended the function. Seven people, including two women, were detained. They were let off as no police complaint was filed by the Congress or the organisers, said a police officer. Police could not identify the person who hurled the slipper.
