New Delhi, 21 Sep 2012: Justifying the recent decisions on FDI and diesel price hike, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the time has come for "hard decisions" and asked the countrymen not to be misled by those trying to confuse them by spreading fear like in 1991.

In a rare televised address to the nation, he insisted that the concerns over allowing FDI in retail were "baseless" as there is enough scope for big and small retailers to grow.

Noting that fears had been created in 1991 when he as Finance Minister had initiated economic reforms, Singh said those behind the scare "did not succeed then" and "they will not succeed now".

He justified the hike in diesel price and cap of six cylinders on subsidised LPG, saying these were required in the difficult economic situation and to avoid increase in fiscal deficit that would lead to steep rise in cost of essential commodities.

"No government likes to impose burdens on the common man... At the same time, it is the responsibility of the government to defend the national interest, and protect the long term future of our people," Singh said.

"We have much to do to protect the interests of our nation and we must do it now. At times, we need to say ’no’ to the easy option and say ’yes’ to the more difficult one. This happens to be one such occasion. The time has come for hard decisions," he said, adding, "for this, I need your trust, your understanding and your cooperation."

He recalled that the last time the nation faced this problem was in 1991. "Nobody was willing to lend us even small amounts of money then. We came out of that crisis by taking strong, resolute steps. You can see the positive results of those steps," he said.

"We are not in that situation today, but we must act before people lose confidence in our economy," Singh said. Underlining that the government was at a "point where we can reverse the slowdown in our growth", he said, "We need a revival in investor confidence domestically and globally. The decisions we have taken recently are necessary for this purpose".

He made the 15-minute address to the nation in Hindi and English against the backdrop of uproar over the recent decisions to allow FDI in multi-brand retail, Rs 5 increase in diesel price and cap on subsidised LPG cylinders.

If you give 6 cylinders what to with other six months. should I join ANNA for hunger strike with the family? News papers details huge number of cylinders are being used by politicians and other leaders and Well to do and it is not being checked or curtailed. only common man is oput to suffe. It is Bad and inhuman. The very thinking of the UPA Govt. is bad They must tighten theirs belts and give what is due to the common man. There should be roll back in all items revised recently.

What ever the P.M. may say. in the prsent context of Economy he must take hard decisions of Rolling back cutting of cooking Gas cylinders and increase in petrolium pprices . Hemust also take a hard decision in rolling back the hike in allowances of parliamentarians, upto 25% because they enjoy all facilities at the cost of the Public where ever they go and also get allowances. They get in both Hands. This quantum which is huge may be considred as subsidy for the above said items and help the common man to survive/ breath. It is too much my dear P.M. Open your eyes and see to consider this early.

A courageous move and step forward towards the economic growth of the country and its people. In 1991 when the Government was close to default Dr. Singh, then Finance Minister introduced economic reforms by introducing trade and investment, private sector enterprise and competition was encouraged in telecoms and civil aviation. Dr. Singh was widely criticized by the opposition then but now we all can witness India's progress which has put us on the global map. Opposition is just worried about the vote bank and portraying as pro-people whereas in fact they are anti-development of country as well as people.

With old fox Pranab-da out of way in the Asoka Gardens and PC back in the south block, MMS gathered guts to let Mamata-di go and won is freedom of action. But his reforms should not stop at tinkering with LPG, diesel and FDI notifications. There are largess handed out to industries and businesses that should go. All that money should go into public education and health sectors.
