Shirva: Kannada bagged 8 Jnanapeet Awards for being Most Prosperous Language in India; Dr Mohan Al

Shirva, 09 Dec 2012: Kannada has bagged 8 Jnanapeet Awards, for being the most prosperous a language among about 3,000 languages in India. It has been enriched by contemporary litterateurs such as Adikavi Pampa, religious awakening by psalmist Basavanna, social equality by Purandaradas, new generation of litterateur Gopalakrishna Adiga, new generation of poet Muddana, and others. The need of the hour is to bring about awakening among enlightened Kannadigas’ and youth towards love for mother tongue Kannada and its cultural splendor, said Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri.
Dr Mohan was speaking after inaugurating Cheluva Kannada Nadu, Kannada Utsav that was held at Hilary Gonsalves stage, at the aegis of St Mary’s College Alumni Association, Shirva, near here on Saturday December 8.
The regional languages played vital role in China, Japan, Germany and Russia, while Kannada deserves due recognition for its literary contributions to the nation, added Dr Mohan.
Professor Krishne Gowda was the chief guest of occasion. He said that coastal residents enriched Kannada by Yakshagana, Bhootaradane and traditional worship. The human bonding promotes cultural splendor, said Professor Krishne Gowda.
Fr Stany Tauro, parish priest of Our Lady of Health presided the programme.
The retired lecturer K S Sridaramurti was felicitated by St Mary’s College Alumni Association at the same occasion.
St Mary’s High School headmaster Devendra Nayak and St Mary’s Pre-University College principal Irene Mendonca were present.
The alumni Association president Simon D’Souza welcomed the gathering. Meghashree rendered prayers. Secretary Mathias Lobo proposed vote of thanks.
