Moodubelle: A dream come true-St. Lawrence Degree College begins academic year with confidence

Moodubelle, 14 Jun 2012: A long standing dream of Belleans to have a degree college in Moodubelle for which a number of people toiled since last year, eventually fructified on June 14, 2012 as St. Lawrence Degree College took the first step in the journey of higher education with the commencement of the Academic Year 2012-13. Hence, history is being made in St. Lawrence Educational Institutions of Moodubelle by adding St. Lawrence Degree College to its list.
Students of First Year B.A. and B.Com. classes assembled in the college premises on the bright morning of Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 9.30 am. With the arrival of Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Correspondent of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions, nominated students inaugurated their respective classrooms and other rooms by cutting the ribbons tied in front of the entrance doors one by one following which Rev. Fr. Josey Fernandes blessed each and every room.
The B.Com. classroom was inaugurated by Vipin Loy Machado who had stood first among the students of St. Lawrence PU College, Moodubelle. The B.A. classroom was inaugurated by Abhijit Acharya, staffroom by Mrs. Sarita D’Souza, Vice Principal, office room by Benita Edna Quadros, the office staff, sports room by Deril Mathais, Language classroom by Sarita Lavina D’Souza and Sushmitha, Ladies Room by Ashwini Poojary and Library Hall by Deeksha Kulal.
Following the inauguration of the classrooms and other facilities and blessing by Fr. Joswey Fernandes, all students and staff members assembled in the Library Hall where Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes recited the prayer that was relevant to the occasion. Thereafter, Fr. Joswey, the Correspndent, Commodore Jerome Castelino, Convener of the College Committee and Principal Dr. Eugene D’Souza occupied chairs on the dais.
In his introductory and welcome address Dr. Eugene D’Souza traced the circumstances that led to the establishment of St. Lawrence Degree College in Moodubelle and welcomed Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, the guiding force behind the establishment of the college; Commodore Jerome Castelino, who had toiled practically day and night in putting the college in right direction in all respects; and also welcomed the well qualified, experienced and dedicated lecturers.
Welcoming the students, Dr. Eugene D’Souza said that in spite of establishing a degree college and appointing experienced staff, the college would not be able to function unless there are students. He further said that all students who have taken admission to the First Year of B.A. and B.Com. courses with great expectation will not be disappointed as the College Management, Principal and teaching staff will take special care to see to it that they will excel not only in their studies but also in all co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and help them in developing their personality.
In his address Commodore Jerome Castelino congratulated the students for their success in their PUC examination and appreciated the fact that they had taken admission in St. Lawrence College, Moodubelle. He said that all students irrespective of their performance in the examination or economic background will be treated equally. He said that the college will endeavour to help the brighter students to achieve greater academic height and those who are academically weak to catch up with the brighter students.
In the course of his address, Commodore Jerome Castelino made an appeal to the students to be disciplined, sincere and hardworking and assured them that the lecturers and the college administration will work hard to fulfill their and their parents aspiration for their better education and all round development.
Commodore Jerome Castelino introduced the Principal and each member of the teaching staff to the students. Thereafter, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes handed over the appointment letters from the CBE to the Principal and members of the teaching and non-teaching staff.
In his presidential message, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes narrated the historical importance of Belle and said that Shri Madhvacharya, the great exponent of the Dvaita philosophy and founder of the Shri Krishna temple at Udupi and Ashta Mutts and the world renowned painter Padmabhushan K.K. Hebbar were born in Belle. He also traced the history of a century of both the Church dedicated to St. Lawrence and the educational institutions run by the parish. He pointed out that the Church Aided Higher Primary School will be completing a century next year. He further said that having had the educational institutions till PUC, it was a dream of the parish to have a degree college which came to be fulfilled with the commencement of the academic year 2012-13.
Mrs. Sarita D’Souza, Vice Principal compeered the programme and also proposed the vote of thanks and assured the Management that she and other staff members will strive hard to meet the aspirations of the students, their parents and the Management.
Following the end of the inauguration of the Academic Year 2012-13, sweets were distributed to the college students. Sweets were also distributed to the students of the Church Aided Higher Primary school to mark the beginning of the academic year of the degree college.
After taking group pictures of both B.A. and B.Com. students along with the Correspondent, Convener of the College Committee, Principal, Vice Principal and staff members, students proceeded to their respective classrooms for further instruction.
