London: Grand Celebration of Konkan Day by UK Konkans

London, 19 July 2011: After months of preparation, UK Konkans successfully hosted Konkan Day on July 17. Weather was exceptionally generous to UK Konkans on the day.
Konkan Day - The concept of this cultural event started back in 2005, and still continues to attract Mangalorean Christians from all over the UK. Mangalorean from all corners of the UK gathered in the Addlestone Community Centre braving the adverse weather warnings. Their enthusiasm showed their true love for Konkani language and Mangalorean culture.
The event kicked off with a welcome talk by Eric D’Souza, after which Sunil D’Cunha took over as compere for the day.
Members and guests were treated to a variety of skits, music and dances. Various skits were performed by Praveen D’Costa, Eric D’Souza, Alice D’Souza, Esthela Vaz, Harold D’Souza, Shanthi Menezes, Gratian D’Silva and Tom D’Souza.
Joanna, Glenish and Gelnston D’Silva and Beena D’Souza performed impressive Bollywood dance routines.
The audience enjoyed the Konkan March, various games and live performances by renowned vocalist Johnson Crasta who was accompanied by compere Sunil D’Cunha. Gratian D’Silva, Tia D’Souza and Elton D’Souza also rendered their voices to various songs.
It was a great time to see kids take part and enjoy the variety of games designed for them.
Delicious food prepared in Mangalorean style was served to all guests after Fr Manoj made a pre-meal invocation.
Konkan Day 2011 ended with raffle draw, a game of housie, followed by a Baila session wherein the entire audience gathered on the dance floor and sweated for the non-stop medley of Konkani songs.
The feedback received suggested that it was a grand success and the audience were not disappointed with any aspects. UK Konkans has plans for more events as this and promises every event to be better than the previous.
