Mangalore: Mayor Inaugurates Independence Cup football tourney at Nehru Maidan

Mangalore, 31 Jul 2014: The mayor Mahabala Marla inaugurated eighteenth Independence Cup Football tournament at Nehru Maidan here on Wednesday July 30.
Speaking on the occasion, mayor Marla said, ‘It’s the duty of the civic body to draw consensus among corporate about the sports and the civic body has proposed this under the name of Mayor Cup. The corporates have expressed their will for organizing the Mayor Cup, which would help in shaping better level of sports in the district. The decision in connection to the Mayor Cup event will be formal after corporates give their nod in the meeting scheduled on Wednesday July 30.’
The mayor Marla later congratulated the district football team for bagging Karnataka state championship cup and urged Dakshina Kannada Football Association (DKFA) to persuade more number of children to take up the sports.
ZP president Asha Timmappa was present on the occasion.
The foot ball coach and former Indian player under 18 league John D’Souza, said, ‘The craze for football among the students of Mangalore is increasing. In order to provide better amenities for the sporting students, the city needs at least 2 stadiums,’ said John.
Over 215 teams are competing in different categories in Independence Cup – 2014 than the last year’s 196 teams.
