Moodubelle, 02 October 2010: The 141st birthday of the ‘Father of the Nation’-Mahatma Gandhi was observed in a unique way in St. Lawrence Composite PU College on 2nd October 2010 at 9.30 am. As Mahatma Gandhi stressed on prayer and self-work, the students of the High School and PU College observed the day with prayer, meditation and shramadhan in the premises of their educational institution.
At 9.30 am, the Principal of the institution, Fr. Paul Sequeira unfurled the national flag to mark the birth day of Mahatma Gandhi. Thereafter, the students and staff members assembled in the College Hall where Fr. Paul Sequeira paid homage to the Mahatma by offering flowers to the painted portrait of Mhatma Gandhi. Thereafter, Srinivas Ballal, teacher of High school, who also is an expert on the yoga gave instructions to the students to observe five minutes long meditation through ‘Dhyana Mudra’, which the students did without any disturbance and with thorough concentration.
The students of the PU College accompanied by Mrs. Chandrakala presented some of the favourite prayer songs of Mahatma Gandhi which included ‘Vaishnava Janatho Tene Kahiye…’ and ‘Raghupati Raghava Rajaram…’
Following the prayer songs, the students were assigned certain areas and tasks in the campus of the institution for ‘shramadhan’, which the students carried on for one hour. Thereafter the students were served with snacks.
Explaining the unique way of observing the Gandhi Jayanti, Fr. Paul Sequeira said that Mahatma Gandhi always emphasized on prayer before the beginning of any work. He also stressed on cleanliness and doing one’s own work. Hence, it was felt that this year the students should be made aware of these noble ideals of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of the observation of his 141st birthday.
