Udupi indoor stadium nearing completion

Udupi, 31 January 2011: Assistant Director of the Department of Sports and Youth Services S. Vittal Shetty said on Tuesday that work on the indoor stadium here was in final stages of completion.
Mr. Shetty told presspersons here that the stadium had shuttle badminton, volleyball, basketball, handball and table tennis courts. It also had a gym also.
The cost of the stadium had been estimated at Rs. 3 crore. A proposal had been submitted to construct a swimming pool near the stadium at a cost of Rs. 2 crore.
The department had submitted a proposal to construct a junior sports hostel near the district stadium at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.
Thirty-eight students (from fifth to seventh standard) being in trained in athletics and volleyball were housed in the rooms at the district stadium, he said.
The department could take 50 students for the junior sports hostel (presently housed in the district atadium) here. The selection of students below 11 years (moving from fourth to fifth standard) for athletics and volleyball would be held in five educational zones of the district, he said.
They are at the district stadium for Udupi zone on January 31, Kundapur taluk stadium for Kundapur zone on February 1, Gandhi Maidan in Karkala for Karkala zone on February 2, Gandhi Maidan in Byndoor for Byndoor zone on February 3, and Government Pre-University College Ground in Brahmavar for Brahmavar zone on February 4.
The district-level selection will be held at the district stadium in Udupi on February 7.
