Manipal, 07 June 2011: A mother poisoned her eight-month-old daughter and killed herself by jumping on to a railway track near Manipal. The baby’s body was found at the Perampali railway track near Ambagilu in Shivalli village.
Sulekha, 28, a nurse at a private hospital, had married driver Shashi a year ago. Theirs was an inter-caste marriage. Days after the wedding, there were differences between Sulekha and Shashi’s mother which forced him to shift to a rented house in Chamundeshwarinagar. On May 26, she went missing with the baby. Her husband complained to Madikeri police. On June 5 around 3.30pm, Shashi got a call from Sulekha, who said she had killed their baby and was going to kill herself.
Police recovered an 8-page suicide note which states that Shashi fought with her whenever the baby cried and that she objected to him visiting his mother at Kannandabane.
It is reported that after leaving her house in Madikeri, she stayed in a friend’s house in Manipal. She had told them her husband would join her soon.
