New Delhi, 19 August 2010: A rainy morning greeted Delhiites on Thursday with many of them on way to schools and offices getting drenched even as vehicles moved at a slower pace due to water logging in many areas. Though the sky was overcast from early morning, the showers began at 8.45 am during the peak morning rush hours.
The city received 4.9 mm of rains for a period of 24 hours till 8:30 am on Wednesday. Many people were seen taking shelter below flyovers and bus stops across the city. Many scooterists parked their two-wheelers below the flyover resulting in shrinking of road space for vehicular movement.
Vehicular movement was slow on many of the busy stretches like Vikas Marg, Connaught Place, AIIMS, IIT, Outer Ring Road. Traffic movement was also slow on Badarpur Border, Azad Market and Kishan Ganj Railway crossing due to water logging.
The movement of vehicles was also affected due to break down of vehicles on Shivaji Park-Punjabi Bagh, Janakpuri-Dhaula Kuan, Hanuman Setu-ISBT, Mukarba Chowk-Bye Pass, Chandki Ram Akhra-Wazirabad, Wazirabad Bridge-Khajuri and Mehrauli-Mahipalpur routes.
Heavy rains had lashed the capital city last evening leading to waterlogging and traffic snarls in several areas. Some commuters complained that motorcyclists parked their vehicles below flyovers and foot-overbridges, creating traffic problems.
Pushpanjali Bisht Kanunjna, a commuter, said traffic was disrupted near foot over bridges on Outer Ring Road at Greater Kailash-II and Kalkaji Temple as people parked their two wheelers to save themselves from rains. Another commuter Ankit Marwah said motorcyclists have blocked the road to protect themselves from rain right at the start of the DND flyover from Ashram resulting in huge traffic jams.
Traffic snarls and waterlogging were also reported from Hauz Rani, Lajpat Nagar, MB Road Saket Sports Complex, Durga Puri Chowk towards Loni, Qutub metro station, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Rajghat, Sarita Vihar flyover, Hanuman Setu,
Jasola T-point, Anandmai Marg, Chirag Delhi and Moolchand. Vehicles were seen choc-a-bloc on the DND flyover which connects Delhi and Noida, AIIMS, South-Ex, Moti Bagh West, Nizamuddin and Vivekanand Marg.
Because of heavy rains, a senior police official said, traffic was diverted from Raj Ghat crossing on Ring Road towards Delhi secretariat.
