Mangalore, 21 Nov 2013: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore with A grade, making it the first medical college under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore to be so accredited. NAAC is an autonomous and highest body in India established by University Grants Commission to assess and accredit institutions in higher education in the country.
Describing the process as tedious, Dr Jayaprakash Alva, dean said the NAAC team visited the campus in August this year and process leading up to the accreditation was demanding, but the final result is there for all to see. "We scored 3.15 CGPA out of a maximum of 4," Dr Alva said adding that the NAAC accreditation that is valid for a five year period will only fuel the college’s ambition to progress into a university on its own.
Rev Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa, administrator said the above success is also enhanced by the fact that the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories has accredited the three clinical laboratories of the Father Muller Medical College Hospital - microbiology, biochemistry and pathology. HJospital is the only medical institution in the city which has all its three laboratories accredited by NABL guaranteeing quality of service, he said.
The hospital as a whole is undergoing the process of accreditation and the pre-assessment by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) is over. Dr Alva said a team from NABH was in the hospital a week ago and final results will be known shortly. "We will need to make a few changes based on their suggestions.
