Mangalore: Builder fired at near Kadri Park

Mangalore, 26 May 2011: Armed assailants allegedly fired at the car in which a builder and his family members were seated outside Kadri Park here on Thursday.
Suresh Bhandary of Prithvi Builders, Karangalpady, his wife and daughter escaped unhurt.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) M. Muthuraya told The Hindu that the three had come to the park for evening walk. Just when they had begun the journey in the car with Mr. Bhandary in the driving seat, two motorcycle-borne persons wearing helmets fired at the vehicle and sped away. The bullet hit bottom portion of right side rear door. The incident took place at about 7 p.m., he said.

Mr. Muthuraya said the three immediately rushed to the Mangalore East Police Station (Kadri station) nearby. He said that Mr. Bhandary told the police that two years ago he had received a phone call from a person who identified himself as Bannanje Raja demanding Rs. 2 crore. When Mr. Bhandary told the caller that he (Mr. Bhandary) did not have the money, the caller demanded Rs. 1 crore. Mr. Bhandary told the police that he refused to give any money.
Later, he did not receive any call demanding money. Mr. Bhandary suspects that the caller might be behind the firing.
Mr. Bhandary’s wife told The Hindu that usually Mr. Bhandary went alone for evening walk. She and her daughter had accompanied him on Thursday. They were returning home when fired at.
She said that they could not identify the persons who fired at the car.
Top police officials visited the spot.
