Eve teasing: Girl commits ‘suicide’
Hindustan Times
Ghaziabad, May 02, 2010: A Class XII student from Shalimar Garden area in Ghaziabad allegedly committed suicide on Saturday morning. She was allegedly subjected to eve teasing for over two years by men in her neighbourhood.
In this context, a local Panchayat was also held on Thursday, which had scolded the men and requested the girl’s family not to approach the police.
Police said Neetu Kumar (18), a Class XII student of a government school in Seema Puri in Delhi, was found hanging inside her room by her family. The family rushed her to the hospital but she was declared brought dead, the police said.
The girl’s family has alleged that the girl was once again subjected to eve teasing on Friday evening by several neighbours including Kalu Kumar, Ravi Kumar and Birju Kumar.
The family has also named a woman, Sangeeta Singh (38), in an abetment to suicide case (section 306 of IPC) registered at Sahibabad police station.
“The woman and these three men used to harass her and subjected her to mental torture. Sangeeta Singh incited her neighbours to tease my sister. After the Panchayat, my sister was again harassed on Friday evening and she committed suicide on Saturday morning,” victim’s brother Inder Pal told HT.
The police weren’t convinced about the suicide theory. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), after enquiries from Sahibabad SHO Suraj Pal Singh, ordered a thorough probe into the incident.
“No suicide note was found from the scene of crime and the family members had removed the body and had opened up the room before the police arrived. Suicide cannot be concluded immediately,” the SSP said.
Though it hasn’t been proven, the official suspected that it could be a case of honour killing.
“During the Panchayat hearing, both the groups had agreed to look after their children. It means there could be some relation between prime-accused Kalu and the girl. The victim’s family never approached the police for help. This is under investigation," the SSP said.
No arrests were made till Saturday evening and the accused were absconding, police said.
