08 October 2010: Some say it’s going to be the end of the world, others believe it’s the most auspicious day of the year. Either way, 10.10.10 is just around the corner and here’s what Netizens are saying about the day that comes once in a lifetime. Shutterbugs have cameras ready, to mark the date by doing something creative at 10 am on 10.10.10 and sharing the photo with the rest of Flickrverse. In Twitterverse too, tweeple are counting down to this Sunday. FunnyOrFact tweets, “This month we have 10.10.10 & 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, 5 Sundays. This only happens once in 823 years.”

A fact that seems to have been noticed by activists too, as they are planning events around that date. Human Rights Watch, together with 60 other organisations including Oxfam and the American Red Cross, is asking people around the world to help document life on earth during a 24-hour period (10.10.10), by creating videos and uploading them online (onedayonearth.org). Climate activists too plan to set a world record by organising more than 6,300 ‘climate work parties,’ in 187 countries including India (avaaz.org).

From the serious to the frivolous, the date has attracted them all. One fun Facebook page called ‘I bet I can find 1,000,000 who hate Miley Cyrus by 10.10.10’ has already received over a million ‘likes’. Says IT professional Ashish Biyani, “I won’t be marking the day in any personal way but I’m looking forward to checking out online activities on the date. I’m a conspiracy theory buff so I’d love to see what doomsday predictions are around on the Internet.”

Student Rithika Karumbaiah adds, “I think the date is cool. 10.10.10 is an awesome time to do something meaningful, because who knows if you’ll live to see 11.11.11?” While the date is as near to perfect as it gets for the Chinese, it is auspicious even for Indians, according to numerologist Nilakanta Ramessh. “The digits of the number 10 add up to one, which represents the sun — a symbol of power. It also happens to fall on a Sunday, increasing its significance,” he says.
