Beltangady,3 Dec 2013: In this new age of science and technology, there are many contrasts.  The homes and worship centers have become spacious, while the thinking has narrowed.  In spite Mangalayana has been into orbit to explore Mars, we have forgotten the presence of our Creator.  Although we have expanded our knowledge about the earth, our knowledge about soul is insignificant.  We talk more but do a little.  In order to take refuge from all these contrasts of knowledge era, its essential that one should take interest in literature, music and art.  The spiritual awakening and to develop human virtues along with knowledge are the need of the hour, said Kuvempu University former chancellor Dr K Chidanand Gowda Mysore.

Dr Gowda was speaking after inaugurating Sahitya Sammelan that was held at Dharmasthala, here as part of Lakshadeepotsav on Monday December 2.

Only humans have the ability to create literature to enjoy reading.  One can attain peace and happiness through literature.  The literature has potential for exploration.  Kannada alphabets are significant in the world.  Kannada is a rich language with wide variety of words.  One can get peace of mind by reading literature and to be engaged in art and music, added Dr Gowda.

Dharwad’s renowned litterateur Dr Veena Shanteshwar in her presidential address said that there lies greater need to curb superstitious beliefs such as rolling-over-food abandoned by high castes people, nude offering and other blind beliefs through enacting laws.  The ignorance of people are exploited in the guise of Vastu and astrology.  Meanwhile, the blind beliefs can be curbed by teaching human virtues with scientific touch among the students from primary classes itself, said Veena.

Veena urged the government to introduce Sarojini Mahishi Report at the earliest.  The education quality in schools had to be improved along with grades of teachers.  The study on research in Kannada that has classical status in Indian constitution had to be undertaken.  The top Kannada works had to be translated in other languages, besides Kannada has to be made compulsory in every stage, added Veena.

Literature had to be pro-people: Dr Heggade

Dr Heggade in his introductory address said that the literature has to benefit the society and not seek mere popularity.  The literature should be like a light that reforms ones way of thinking and promote wellbeing, said Dr Heggade.

There should be bartering among different languages of the country, which would strengthen national unity.  The literature should not be stagnant; instead it has to maintain fluidity.  Meanwhile, the literature gets a fillip when there are plenty of people interested in it, added Dr Heggade.

Ace swimmer Gopal Karvi felicitated:

Dr Heggade felicitated ace swimmer Gopal Karvi from Kundapur who attempted Guinness Record by presenting cash money of Rs 1 lac, a gold ring, a memento and draping with a shawl on the same occasion.

Bangalore Doordarshan artiste Nandini Aryan, journalist Professor Ravindra Reshme and Udyavar Madhav Acharya explained the significance of literature in creating healthy society.

Innumerable devotees participated in Lakshadeepotsav at Sri Kshetra Manjunateshwar temple, Dharmasthala, here after the stage programme.
