  • It was unfortunate that many trees had to be cut down due to the road widening process.

Mangalore, 27 July 2011: However, 20,000 saplings have been planted last year to equalise the tress that were felled and this year as many as 22,000 saplings will be planted, said MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayprakash after planting saplings in a Vanamahotsava programme organised by Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Association in Kadri Park on Wednesday.

Media acts as an excellent channel in carrying social awareness messages. It is essential that people know the importance of this green initiative so that they can contribute in making Mangalore clean and green, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Range Forest Officer Clifford Lobo said that there are plans of planting as many as 16,000 saplings on the coastal belt in places like Ullal, Bengre, Sashithalu and Tannirbhavi. This project is called as ‘Hasiru Kavacha’. Calophyllum Inophyllum trees and Lavancha grass will be planted on the coastal stretch as these plants are good soil binders.Trees will also be planted in the City and this project is called as ‘Hasiru Mangalore Abhiyan’.

As many as 300 ornamental and shade giving trees will be planted in Kadri Park. Trees will also be planted in cemeteries. As many as 2,000 saplings have been planted in Cascia, Nandigudda, Jeppu, Bondel crematoriums and other graveyards last year, he said and added that beautifying cemeteries will provide lung space to city and usually no one fells trees in these places.
