CBI raids Adarsh Society office and promoters

New Delhi, 30 January 2011: A day after filing its first FIR, Adarsh Housing Society promoters RC Thakur and Retired Brigadier MM Wangchu have been reported to be absconding. On Sunday, the Central Bureau of Investigation conducted raids in connection with the Adarsh Society scam.CBI conducted raids in seven cities across the country including Patna, Nagpur, Pune and Mumbai - at the residences of promoters MM Wangchu, Kanhaiyalal Gidwani and RC Thakur.

Two flats and one office of Kanhaiyalal Gidwani and three houses of RC Thakur in Thane, Nagpur and Bihar were raided. The raids were conducted at the Adarsh Society office in Mumbai.

After months of conducting a preliminary inquiry into the controversial Adarsh society scam, the CBI finally registered an FIR on Saturday against 13 people. Former chief minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavhan’s name has also been mentioned in the FIR.

Among those named in the FIR are promoters of the Adarsh co-operative housing society, former and serving bureaucrats, retired army officials and politicians.

The accused have been charged of criminal conspiracy, forgery, and misappropriation amongst other sections of the IPC, and the prevention of corruption act.
