Chittagong, 14 March 2011: Netherlands’ batsmen committed harakiri as they made a mess of their decision to bat first with three batsmen getting run-out and none giving Ryan ten Doeschate company who fought a lone battle against Bangladesh in a Group B encounter here on Monday.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan’s tactic to open with a spin-pace combination reaped rich benefits as the Netherlands’ struggle eventually led to the fall of two early wickets. Opener Wesley Barresi (10) was the first to depart after he was tied up by Shakib, which frustrated Barresi to throw his wicket away.

Mudassar Bukhari (6) fell soon after as he micued a shot off Abdur Razzak for a skier to be easily pouched by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim. A small partnership followed between Eric Swarczynski and Tom Cooper but could go only as far as 29 runs when disaster struck the Dutch in the form of Swarczynski’s (28) run-out.

Cooper and Ryan ten Doeschate were now left to resurrect Netherlands’ innings but couldn’t materialize their aspirations as Cooper (29) too fell to a needless run-out, leaving his team in a precarious situation at 79/4 in the 26th over. Earlier, Dutch skipper Peter Borren won the toss and chose to bat first.

While for the Netherlands the World Cup is set to get over in the qualifying rounds itself, Bangladesh need to win here and in the next match against South Africa to harbor any hopes of entering the last-eight stage.

In that endeavour, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan elected to go in with Shahriar Nafees and Suhrawadi Shuvo in place of Raqibul Hasan and Naeem Islam.

The Dutch, on the other hand, brought in a specialist spinner in the form of off-spinner Adeel Raja who makes his 2011 World Cup debut.

Teams:

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Shahriar Nafees, Shakib Al Hasan (c), Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Suhrawadi Shuvo, Abdur Razzak, Shafiul Islam, Rubel Hossain,

Netherlands: E Szwarczynski, W Barresi (wk), T Cooper, R ten Doeschate, A Kervezee, T de Grooth, A Buurman, P Borren (c), Mudassar Bukhari, PM Seelaar, Adeel Raja
