Mangalore: CSI Church to hold sesquicentennial celebrations
Mangalore, 01 Dec 2012 (TOI): The 150 years old Shanthi Cathedral, Balmatta in the city is all set to celebrate the grand finale of the post centenary golden jubilee.
Shanthi Cathedral 150 thAnniversary Celebration Committee has held various programmes to mark the occasion and a grand finale will be held on December 9. A special Choral and Orchestral Concert by Balmatta Musical Association (BMA) is expected to attract large crowd at the Cathedral on December 2.
Cathedral secretary Charles V Furtado told TOI that the BMA, which has been serving the Church in particular and society at large for neary 86 years, is all set to present the mega event as part of the sesquicentennial celebrations of the Cathedral.
"The BMA, which was founded in 1926 under the leadership of the then Pastor of Shanthi Church Rev R Satyavratha, has grown from strength to strength and now is continuing to serve the Church by promoting the musical talents of its members and thereby helping to raise the standard of Church music. Among the milestones traversed by the BMA, the most prominent are the golden jubilee concert in 1977, the diamond jubilee concert in 1986, the platinum jubilee concert in 2002 and the concert to celebrate the 80 thanniversary of BMA in 2006," Furtado said.
Young virtuoso Oscar Weltha will conduct the concert, which will be a soul stirring amalgam of Church music, he added.
