Mangalore, 02 Aug 2012: Colleges here do not want to traumatize the boys and girls, who were at the receiving end from the goons on Saturday, by taking disciplinary action against them. But some colleges here specify that organizing parties requires their explicit permission.

SDM College of Business Management Principal D Devaraj said: Our college prospectus rule 13, since 1978, specifies that students of the college need permission to conduct parties. The conditions also specify no serving of alcohol and closure time by 10 pm, under the supervision of a staff member of the college.

But more often than not this rule is flouted. We do know that it is violated. Take the case of our students getting robbed in Kodagu recently. They had lied to their parents that they were going for a NSS programme and they also took money. We have warned them,’’ he said.

Devaraj said: Irrespective of the permission of the parents, the college permission is a must, unless it’s party at home. Any party, organized by students, falls under the ambit of this rule. They are our students. We have responsibility towards them and curbing a bit of their freedom is in their own interest,’’ adds Devaraj.

SDM Business Management has close to 1,700 students in BBM and BCA courses. It applies to all,’’ he added.

Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal of St Aloysius College, says the college does not have such a rule for students - unless group of students identify themselves as part of the college. What happened on Saturday is not their fault. No illegality was going on,’’ he said.

Sahyadri College of Engineering Chairman Manjunath Bhandary said: There’s no question of any action against anybody. Who are we to? In fact, we went to the students’ house and asked them to attend classes regularly assuring all our moral support. If they were hostelites, it was a different matter.’’
