"The Story of Mankind

Before man learnt to write and read he knew to tell a tale

The impact of each story was strong and would prevail

Being handed down through centuries from father to his son

Told and retold over years myths and yarns were spun

That Stories shape the way we act, the way we think and feel

Can’t be overstated as there’s so much they reveal

About the things that matter while they mould and shape our thoughts

They mirror Life – our hopes and dreams – while we unearth their plots

Stories have the power to inspire and delight

Enchanting every listener while the soul goes on a flight

Packed with punch they transport us to flickering flames so bright

That warmed our shivering ancestors who slept in caves all night

There’s something about fire in the middle of the night

It bonds and mellows people and for sure it does excite

Crowding in these stony caves where they felt safe and warm

They shared a zillion ideas –Mans’ very first Brainstorm

A cultural awakening while they shacked and journeyed on

From ape-like grunts they coined new words – a whole new lexicon

I wonder what they spoke about a million years ago

To stave off boredom in the dark I guess we’ll never know

Did they make up tales about the stars up in the sky?

While their children interrupted asking who and how and why

Maybe they spoke of prey they stalked or the waning moon

Or told their kids to go to sleep while they hummed a tune

We’ll never know the answers though you and I can guess

That their tales of sheer resilience had led to their success

The Worlds’ first story tellers cast a captivating spell

While relationships were fostered and friendship seemed to jell

In the comfort of my living room I switched off every light

And travelled to a Palaeolithic cave to spend the night

I felt a strong connection and slowly built rapport

With ancient men who lived out there – the first ones to explore

We knew we came a long way from the apes that lived in trees

And with intellectual dialogue we evolved to Socrates

5 million years from now us humans will have been replaced

By wiser forms than all of us and Life that’s too fast paced

Reading Darwin’s Theory which connects the ape to man

I pray to God while I submit to his eternal plan

And though I can’t connect the dots my faith is firm and strong

Allah, Christ or Brahma – they guide me through the storm

Until the soul departs from flesh we’ll never understand

The Mysteries of the Universe and all that God has planned

While we may not have the answers I do not have a doubt

That when you’re in deep water only God can pull you out

Going back to my story now that I’ve digressed

The genius of humanity I strongly feel is the blessed

Man has this inherent urge to lend a helping hand

The story of the Human Race is humbling and yet grand
