Udupi, 22 Mar 2017: A delegation of Udupi taluk fishmongers Association visited the newly-developed fish market at Shirva town, near here on Tuesday, March 21. Shirva fish market was developed by Coastal Development Authority at the cost of Rs 85 lac but the delegation visited to assess the sub-standard quality of work carried out by the contractor.
The development works was carried by a contractor, while a large pit that was located in front of the fish market was caved in within 3 months of inaugural. The state-owned Nirmiti Kendra has not repaired the damage since it emits foul stench causing health hazards to fish mongers and shopkeepers in the locality. The huge pit was draining the effluents from the fish market.
During the visit of the delegation, Shirva panchayat development officer (PDO) and presidents offered to repair the huge pit @ Rs 60,000 that has caved in and remained unrepaired owing to the negligence of Nirmiti Kendra.
The delegation informed that the Association has complained to different concerned department officials including Udupi district Deputy Commissioner over the poor quality of works executed by the contractor at the fish market.
Udupi taluk fishmongers Association vice president Saroja Kanchan, general secretary Laxmi Anand, Shirva fish market representatives Shanta Shriyan and Sukanya Shriyan and others represented the delegation.
