Mangalore, 29 May 2013 : None can stop someone from alcohol abuse.  Similarly, none can force someone to consume alcohol. Everyone knows alcohol consumption is an addiction regardless of rich and poor.  There are people who booze liquor that costs anything from Rs 40 or Rs 100 to Rs 1,000.  The newly-formed state government is contemplating on supplying cheap liquor to the poor.  It’s for us to think whether its right move by the government.  The majority of people consume alcohol worth Rs 40 – Rs 100 – Rs 150 per bottle.

Meanwhile, the government is contemplating to supply liquor at Rs 10 or Rs 20.  It’s a boon to poor, while one can image the state of life of a daily wager.  For example, if a daily wager was consuming a bottle of liquor at a cost of Rs 100 per bottle, now consumes the same at Rs 20, whether he will be able to save the balance of Rs 80!  Is it practical to sell liquor at Rs 20 per bottle that costs Rs 100 to Rs 120?  One has to think whether the cheap liquor is good for health.  It’s better for the government to sell new liquor at Rs 20 per bottle, buying the same that costs Rs 100 to Rs 120 per bottle bearing the difference.

The government believes the rich booze spending Rs 1,000 per bottle, why can’t the poor booze spending just Rs 10 or Rs 20 per bottle.  Instead of this, the poor should booze on rich man’s liquor.  Why can’t the poor become rich to taste his choicest liquor?

The Congress government should focus on critical infrastructure and public utilities issues instead of pandering to lobbies in the name of poor. Water, roads, waterways through inland rivers and sea lanes, quicker and one-window access to all essential and basic government services required by all sections of society and upgrading law and order machinery (police, courts, jails, and intelligence) must be priority. Liquor, dance bars, lotteries, cheap tobacco, and many of excise earning sin businesses may be de-regulated and let the market determine how to deliver to the consumer, addicted or otherwise.
