Udupi/M’Belle, 23 Aug 2017: “Discipline is the key in the success of an individual”, said VS Halamoorthy Rao, Circle Inspector of Kaup while addressing the students of St. Lawrence Composite PU College in an awareness programme jointly organized by the Women’s Cell of St. Lawrence Composite PU College and Shirva Police Station on Wednesday, 23 August 2017 at 11.30 am in St. Lawrence PU College Hall.

 

Circle Inspector Halamoorthy Rao in his speech impressed upon the students to have respect for their parents and teachers and imbibe a sense of discipline without which no one can succeed in their lives with meaningful purpose. He asked the students not to limit their reading of only text books of their subjects but also to enhance their knowledge by reading news-papers, magazines and books on the lives of great people and achievers. In this competitive world acquisition of knowledge and skills are very important. 

 

VS Halamoorthy Rao lamented on the fact that discipline among the students has been on decline so also the respect given by the students to their teachers. Through few examples, the Circle Inspector pointed out lack of discipline and respect among the students towards their teachers and parents. 

 

Speaking further, Circle Inspector said, “You should have high aims in life and try hard to achieve them through hard work  and determination. However, if you do not succeed in achieving that aim, it does not mean that the world has come to an end. There are examples of a number of students running away from home or committing suicide when they fail in their attempts. Committing suicide is a criminal offence.”

Halamoorthy Rao made the students aware of certain laws affecting them. He said that students till second year PUC are not eligible to ride two wheelers as they have not yet completed 18 years of age and as such they do not have driving license and riding any vehicle without license is against the law. He also highlighted on the law pertaining to Protection of Children Against Sexual Offence (POSCO) which is a non-bailable offence. He warned the students against using mobiles which would create problems especially in the case of girls. He said that girls should never respond to missed calls as the strangers might lure them and cultivate false friendship and exploit them. 

 

The Circle Inspector also made the students aware of the laws related to Eve Teasing. He said that the law was incorporated some time back to book those who harass women and girls by various means. Article 354, Sections A,B,C,D deal with various forms of eve teasing under which a person can be detained by the police. Halammorthy Rao informed the teachers and students that they should bring to the notice of  parents, teachers or the police any form of eve teasing and harassment so that proper action taken be taken against the offenders.

 

VS Halamoorthy Rao asked the students to be courteous and helpful towards the senior citizens. He also cautioned the students about the evil of drug abuse and addiction and to be aware of the outsiders who approach them near their institutions and push drugs. He further said that once a person becomes a victim of drug addiction, that is the end of his or her future.

 

In order to promote road safety among the students the Circle Inspector impressed upon them to understand road safety and road signals so that in future they may be able to save their own lives and that of the others by avoiding accidents. Charts with road signals were distributed to the students at the end of the programme.

 

Mrs. Jacinta Danty welcomed the gathering, Anisha Rebello compeered the programme.

 

Principal Naveen Correa, Headmistress Mrs. Leena D’Silva, SI Narasimha Shetty of Shirva Police Station and Ms. Reema Mathias-President of Women’s Cell of St. Lawrence Composite PU College were present on the dais along with Circle Inspector VS Halamoorthy Rao.
