Chennai, 26 Apr 2017: Banners featuring AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala were removed from the party headquarters here, a day after the rival Panneerselvam camp made such a demand to “uphold the sanctity” of the party office.
The Panneerselvam camp welcomed the move, saying it was a “positive step.”
Around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sasikala’s life-sized posters and banners were removed from AIADMK party headquarters and banners of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, which did not feature anyone from Sasikala’s family, were re-erected.
The banners numbering around eight were erected by women’s wing, Amma Peravai, MGR Youth wing, AIADMK’ students wing, AIADMK’s lawyers wing and Drivers’ wing.
Ministers in a huddle
Since morning, senior AIADMK ministers Sellur K. Raju, C. Vijayabaskar, Kadambur Raju, Rajalakshmi and Durai Kannan arrived at the party headquarters to interact with partymen.
On Tuesday, the ‘Presidium Chairman’ of the Panneerselvam led faction, E Madusudanan, had demanded that the portraits of Sasikala be removed from the party office to “uphold the sanctity” of the AIADMK headquarters.
“This is definitely a positive step,” ‘Aspire’ K Swaminathan, Media coordinator of the Panneerselvam led AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) said.
He also said the move came in “continuance” to Mr. Madusudanan’s appeal and said, “We are happy the cadres have decided to remove the banners.”
Mr. Panneerselvam had on Tuesday said that a “conducive” atmosphere was evolving in both camps for talks.
