Doctors, Paramedic Staff Stage Protest in Mangaluru City

Mangaluru, 22 May 2017: Doctors, paramedical staff, medical students from various parts of Dakshina Kannada and neighbouring Udupi districts gathered in large number on May 22 in Mangaluru city to protest against recent assault on a physician in Deralakatte near Mangaluru city.  Complete Medical Bandh was called by Mangaluru Chapter of The Indian Medical Association with the support of paramedical staff.

 

 

The protesters held a march from Jyothi circle to deputy commissioner (DC) office and submitted a memorandum to Dakshina Kannada DC on the issue. The protesters urged the government to take necessary legal action against recent attack on the doctor and to act strictly against the culprits to prevent such incidents in the future also.

 

The protests also involved complete shutdown of all medical, paramedical services in all hospitals, clinics of Dakshina Kannada district. Emergency services including casualty, emergency operation theatre and casualty exempted from the bandh.

 

Alleged assault by a mob of nearly 40 people on Dr Abhijith Shetty, assistant professor at Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital located in Deralakatte prompted the physicians to take to such an ugly step on May 22. Dr Abhijith Shetty allegedly assaulted and kidnapped on early hours of May 16, 2017 after a 65 year old patient died following alleged medical negligence by him. Later, the physician was freed by the police and doctors from the kidnappers near Ullal Bridge when they tried move to another location with the victim.
