Make in India, Digital India: reawakening science research - Dr Ramanada

Karkala, 15 Oct 2016: A daylong workshop on Patenting and IPR Protection was organised by Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) here on Friday, October 14.

 

Professor Dr S Ramananda Shetty, vice chancellor, Nitte University inaugurated the workshop which was held to raise awareness among the young researchers on the need for patenting and technology commercialization.

 

Dr Ramananda spoke on the reawakening of science research in India through the initiatives of union government such as ‘Make in India,’ ‘Digital India,’ ‘Creative India,’ and so on. All this spoke of innovation in science for the benefit of humankind through intervention in healthcare, food security and effective environmental management. He lauded the contributions made by the chief guest Professor Kishore Paknikar, director, Agharkar Research Institute (Autonomous Institute of DST, GoI), Pune through the large number of patents that have led to technologies in the field of medicine, agriculture, metallurgy and nanotechnology and asked the audience to emulate him.

 

 

Professor Kishore enlightened the audience with the research forming his career that led to the various technologies and informed the audience on how research could be pure basic, pure applied or basic inspired applied research, a category to which he belonged.

 

The workshop director Professor Indrani Karunasagar, felt the need for such a workshop, as much of the research done by scientists, doctors and other professionals remained in volumes of thesis adoring the racks of the library. Even research of a high quality that could be protected by Intellectual Property Rights has never seen it develop into technologies and patents.

 

The guest of honour and resource person Profesor Dr Iddya Karunasagar, International Consultant, FAO/WHO, introduced patenting in India and the How, Why, When, What? And the steps involved to the audience.

 

Professor Ramachandra Bhat, Emeritus Professor, ICAR, discussed the economic aspects of patenting and Professor Krishna Shenoy, distinguished Professor, Nitte Education Trust, detailed the steps in US patent process.

 

Professor Indrani Karunasagar welcomed the gathering. Dr Anirban Chakraborty, co-ordinator, NUCSER, proposed the vote of thanks.
